Dolores Lucille Knight Obituary (1928 - 2016)

DOLORES LUCILLE MARTIN KNIGHT 1928-2016 Sidney, Maine - Dolores Lucille Martin Knight, 87, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, November 8, 2016, in the loving arms of her family. Her journey began on November 23, 1928, when she was born in Augusta, Maine, the eldest daughter of Daniel Martin and Noella (Quireon) Martin Bechard. Del attended Augusta public schools until she made the noble choice to support her family during hard times. When she wasn’t working at the shoe factory, Dolores was at home helping her mother raise her siblings. Even from the tender age of 9, she was selfless and generous in the most admirable ways. At the age of 16, Dolores met her soulmate through a letter during WWII, and later married the love of her life, George E. Knight, on October 6, 1946 at St. Mary’s Church in Augusta, Maine. Together, they made their warm home on the range in Sidney, Maine in 1952. Working hard, Living humbly, and being good neighbors, their door was always open to anyone in need. Known by many as the ‘hostess with the mostess’ she had an effortless way of making anyone who met her feel welcomed and loved in her home. Del and George raised three beautiful children together, whom she always held so very close to her heart. She was a dedicated wife, a devoted mother, an excellent cook and baker, a true homemaker who inspired and was admired. Dolores enjoyed dancing around the kitchen, camping with friends, tending to their garden, creating crafts and making flower arrangements, and especially playing cards. Dolores is survived by her beloved husband of 70 glorious years, George Knight, their two sons, Daniel and Joan Knight of Ann Arbor, Michigan and Gary Knight of Sidney, Maine, five grandchildren; Derek Bryan, Danielle (Knight) Mattis and her husband, Jonathan, Denise (Knight) Cope and her husband, Max, Drew Knight and his wife, Haleigh, and Natasha Knight. Eleven great-grandchildren; Payton and Jenna Mattis, Zane and Sloane Cope, Dax Knight, and Alec, Shadai, Devon, Morgan and Evadne Bryan, and Elijah Clarq; her youngest sister, Janet (Martin) Hatch and her husband, Harland, her sisters-in-law, Gwen and Dot Knight, and many wonderful nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her loving daughter, Terrie (Knight) Hall, her mother and father, brothers Gerald and Donald Martin, and one sister, Alice (Martin) Lovering. The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the countless friends, and close neighbors for the cherished decades of love, laughter and support. Del wished to express her appreciation to the Maine General Hospice staff and Dr. Catherine Neilson for their attentive and compassionate care, as well as IRIS and The Sunshine Club. In lieu of flowers, Del asked that a donation be made to the Kidney Cancer Association, P.O. Box 4668 #38269, New York, NY 10163-4668, in hopes that one day we may be a cancer free world. At Dolores’ request, a memorial service will be held at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery Chapel, Mount Vernon Rd., in Augusta, Maine on Wednesday, November 16th at 2 pm.
